Sakai software cooks up e-learning storm

American open source e-learning software, Sakai, is set to be introduced at universities across South Africa from as early as next year.
The Sakai Project, which derives its name from a famous Japanese chef, Hiroyuki Sakai, is a $6.8 million open source project, supported by the international Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI), which promotes open-source development. Sakai is used by powerful tertiary institutions including Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Michigan , the University of Toronto and the University of Hull in the United Kingdom.
