The Chronicle: Taking 'Cyberinfrastructure' to Researchers

It's not just about bytes. It's also about people. Florida International University has adopted that attitude in a new project called Cyberbridges, which it hopes will help develop a new cadre of researchers and engineers well versed in using advanced computation. With a grant from the National Science Foundation, the university has selected four graduate students for CyberBridges fellowships. The fellows will receive intensive training in the use of cyberinfrastructure -- computers, networks, and related hardware and software. The university hopes that the graduate students will proseltyze the professors and graduate students in their own departments. "We're using these Ph.D. students as a bridge to the faculty and the departments," says Heidi Alvarez, the project's principal investigator. More...
