The Chronicle: Popular Education Blog Signs Off

One of the most widely read blogs about technology in education has halted production—at least temporarily. The blog, Online Learning Daily, has for years offered opinions and links to news articles on the topic, helping those in the field stay up to date and cut through the hype to identify key trends. But the blog’s author, Stephen Downes, a research officer at the National Research Council of Canada, announced on Monday that he is taking a "hiatus." In an update posted today, Mr. Downes said that his decision was triggerd by an event "internal to our organization," but he added that he would not elaborate. He did say that his health is fine, and he has not been fired. His fans have been quick to post praise of his past work on his blog this week. As one wrote: “Don’t go away permanently—the learning field needs you.”
