Evaluation of an Online Student Induction and Support Package for Online Learners

EURODL: This paper describes an evaluation of an online Student Induction and Support Package used to prepare both face-to-face and fully online students for learning online. It provides an overview of two components of the Package, the Primer and Survival Guide. It details the type and the nature of the student feedback requested via an online questionnaire and presents the results obtained.
Key findings suggest that using the same online Induction and Support Package for both face-to-face and fully online students is effective. Results also suggest that even those who self-report high levels of IT literacy prior to commencing a course of online study, can still benefit from completing such a Package.
A rationale for using an online Student Induction and Support Package and some possibilities for future research are also discussed.

Apple Releases Free iTunes U Software to Colleges for Coursecasting

Apple Computer will allow any college or university to set up a customized portion of the iTunes Music Store to distribute course content and other audio and video material. The free service will let institutions limit use of some materials to certain people and make other content available to all.
Colleges that participate will be given software tools that will make it easy for professors or students to upload content to iTunes. The files themselves will be stored on servers run by Apple, but college administrators will have control over who can see the files. Colleges will be able to integrate the system with their existing network software so that students can log into the iTunes store using their campus user ID's and passwords.

Finding information on the World Wide Web: A specialty meta–search engine for the academic community

The Web is continuing to grow rapidly and search engine technologies are evolving fast. Despite these developments, some problems still remain, mainly, difficulties in finding relevant, dependable information. This problem is exacerbated in the case of the academic community, which requires reliable scientific materials in various specialized research areas.
We propose that a solution for the academic community might be a meta–search engine which would allow search queries to be sent to several specialty search engines that are most relevant for the information needs of the academic community. The basic premise is that since the material indexed in the repositories of specialty search engines is usually controlled, it is more reliable and of better quality. More...
