Identifying and measuring individual engagement in critical thinking in online discussions

This paper reports on an exploratory case study involving the development of a model for identifying and measuring individual engagement in critical thinking in an online asynchronous discussion (OAD). The model is first developed through a review of the literature on the construct and subsequently applied to the content analysis of the transcripts of eight student participants in an online discussion. The model, which included four critical thinking processes, their descriptions and indicators, proved effective for the identification and measurement of individuals’ critical thinking in OADs. Suggestions for further research include additional testing of the model using other raters in other OADs. More (PDF file)...

Binghamton University expects 2,200 to complete online alcohol-education course

Binghamton University officials are stepping up efforts to increase education among students about alcohol abuse.
In 2004, BU mandated that freshmen take AlcoholEdu, a three-hour online education program. BU is the first SUNY campus to require freshmen to complete the course, Summers said. In the fall 2005 semester, about 95 percent - roughly 1,800 students - completed the course, he said. He expects more than 2,200 students to complete the course by the end of the academic year.
Those who don't complete the course are subject to judicial probation, meaning if a student is involved with an alcohol-related offense, he or she will be given "stricter educational sanctions" that could include writing a paper or working with an agency. Suspension or expulsion from the university isn't a consequence for failing to complete the program, Summers said. More...

Financial Times: Online learning comes of age

New technology allows institutions to take the distance out of remote learning, comments Ray Irving, head of learning resources for the MBA at Warwick Business School in the UK. Certainly, the raft of innovations now available means that e-learning tools make distance learning a viable – and for some a preferable – alternative to more traditional face-to-face, classroom-based learning.International Data Corporation estimates that S$25.31m was spent on e-learning in Singapore alone in 2004 and this figure is expected to triple by 2008. [...] E-learning is also thriving in the US. The research report Growing by Degrees: Online Education in the US 2005 says that online enrolment in the US increased from 1.98m in 2003 to 2.35m a year later, a growth rate more than 10 times that predicted by the National Center for Education Statistics for the general post-secondary student population.

Current Research in Learning Design

A 'learning design' is defined as the description of the teaching-learning process that takes place in a unit of learning (eg, a course, a lesson or any other designed learning event). The key principle in learning design is that it represents the learning activities and the support activities that are performed by different persons (learners, teachers) in the context of a unit of learning. The IMS Learning Design specification aims to represent the learning design of units of learning in a semantic, formal and machine interpretable way. Since its release in 2003 various parties have been active to develop tools, to experiment with Learning Design in practice, or to do research on the further advancement of the specification. The aim of this special issue is to provide an overview of current work in the area. This papers introduces Learning Design, analyses the different papers and provides an overview of current research in Learning Design. The major research issues are at the moment: a) the use of ontologies and semantic web principles & tools related to Learning Design; b) the use of learning design patterns; c) the development of learrning design authoring and content management systems, and d) the development of learning design players, including the issues how to use the integrated set of learning design tools in a variety of settings.

Universities adapt to a shrinking world

The distinction between distance learning and studying on campus is becoming increasingly artificial. While providers of distance learning such as the Open University are boosting the quantity and quality of face-to-face seminars, traditional bricks-and-mortar institutions are supporting students on and off campus through virtual learning environments (VLEs) based on commercial or open access platforms.

The Chronicle: Popular Education Blog Signs Off

One of the most widely read blogs about technology in education has halted production—at least temporarily. The blog, Online Learning Daily, has for years offered opinions and links to news articles on the topic, helping those in the field stay up to date and cut through the hype to identify key trends. But the blog’s author, Stephen Downes, a research officer at the National Research Council of Canada, announced on Monday that he is taking a "hiatus." In an update posted today, Mr. Downes said that his decision was triggerd by an event "internal to our organization," but he added that he would not elaborate. He did say that his health is fine, and he has not been fired. His fans have been quick to post praise of his past work on his blog this week. As one wrote: “Don’t go away permanently—the learning field needs you.”
