The Positive and Challenging Aspects of Learning Online and in Traditional Face-to-Face Classrooms: A Student Perspective

Growth in online enrollment of college courses increased from 19.8% in 2003 to 24.8% in 2004. With the continued investments in online course development and a consumer desire for flexible 24/7 learning, there is no evidence that enrollment rates will slow. Likewise, in the area of teacher preparation, alternative certification programs continue to increase across the United States supplementing if not replacing traditional teacher education programs. In many instances, these programs feature online supplements or provide the course entirely online. With the continued growth in online/alternative certification programs for teacher preparation, it is critical we gain a better understanding in the effectiveness of online learning specific to special education teacher preparation. This issue's column offers an examination of one university's attempt to measure its effectiveness in online delivery. More...

Powraca internet z gniazdka elektycznego

Back to school: how much net?

Type in a subject, click the mouse, and watch Google cough up thousands of Web sites in seconds.
That, teachers say, is the danger when it comes to assigning homework in the 21st century. The Internet, in some ways, has improved what students can do outside the classroom. But it’s also exposed them to an unrestrained world where sketchy sources abound and plagiarism is just a cut-and-paste away

10 lat Amazona

How to make sure your virtual degree is worth the price

In 2003, more than 1 million e-learning students in the nation took college-level courses at home on their personal PC or laptop. It has taken a decade or so, but most online degree programs these days aren't seen as any more or less beneficial to students or to employers (who may be paying for these classes). So how do you choose a topnotch program?
First, it may be best to discover if you are truly suited to this kind of education. "Many online students are juggling work, raising a family and school; sometimes, the only time they have to work on assignments or to participate in online discussions is late at night or early in the morning," says Tom Green, National University's business and management school dean.
