Why Web Literacy Should Be Part of Every Education

Like reading, writing, and arithmetic, web literacy is both content and activity. You don’t just learn “about” reading: you learn to read. You don’t just learn “about” arithmetic: you learn to count and calculate. You don’t just learn “about” the web: you learn to make your own website. As with these other three literacies, web literacy begins simply, with basics you can build upon. For some it can lead to a profession (i.e. becoming a computer programmer) while for most it becomes part of the conceptual DNA that helps you to understand and negotiate the world you live in.

Virginia to require an online course for graduation

About a year ago, the Virginia Beach School Board considered a requirement that all students take an online course before graduation.
It’d be a good experience, advocates argued—another feather in graduates’ digital caps. Opponents worried that it would penalize students who didn’t have computers at home. More...

Public-private partnership transforms school bus into mobile learning lab

With nearly 500,000 school buses transporting students daily in this country, one in particular stands out at Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C. Instead of the familiar vehicle emblazoned with bright yellow paint, this one is wrapped in bold graphics showing enthusiastic students using wireless devices to reflect what actually goes on inside this unique vehicle, known as the Mobile Learning Lab. It’s a retrofitted school bus equipped with its own generator, air conditioner, wireless 4G LTE internet connectivity, on-board tutors, and individual workstations with tablet computers and docking stations.

Szkoła nie uczy myślenia

Zmiany cywilizacyjne, w tym zmiany technologiczne ciągle przyspieszają. Towarzyszą temu coraz silniejsze i liczniejsze głosy o braku powiązania systemu edukacji z rynkiem pracy.

6 Ways Digital Is Changing The Face Of Education

Having just finished my very first online lecture on the history of the internet, I am both heartened and dismayed by the experience. Heartened that 34,077 students can enroll in a class taught by a single professor, but dismayed that education (online or otherwise) continues to push learning-by-rote and a lecture based knowledge-transmission model. One thing remains clear – this is only the beginning of the disruption of higher education as we know it. More...

Virtual learning environments 'allow teachers to help students'

While e-learning technologies will never completely replace humans in school education, they should make the work of educators easier. This is according to Matthew Horn, co-founder of non-profit think tank Innosight Institution and executive director of its educational practice, who argued the job of teaching expects a "super-human" performance from educators. Innovations can therefore "automate or improve on certain tasks", he remarked, stating this enables teachers to increase their focus on other activities. More...

The Khan Academy Goes to Camp, and It’s All Offline

At first blush, it seems an unlikely direction for Mr. Khan, who is best known for his popular online lectures that span topics from geometry to Byzantine art. But it is intended to test the possibilities of both online and offline education. Most of the students in the camp, which is held in Palo Alto, Calif., are seasoned users of his online offerings, he said. At the two-week-long camp, for six hours each day, they dive into projects with their hands, with each other, face to face. More...

Online Education is Real Education

Discussing the relative strengths and weaknesses of education as it occurs on and offline, in and outside of a classroom, is important. Best pedagogical practices have not yet emerged for courses primarily taught online. What opportunities and pitfalls await both on and offline learning environments? Under ideal circumstances, how might we best integrate face-to-face as well as online tools? In non-ideal teaching situations, how can we make the best of the on/offline arrangement handed to us? All of us teaching, and taking, college courses welcome this discussion. What isn’t helpful is condemning a medium of learning, be it face-to-face or via digital technologies, as less real. Some have begun this conversation by disqualifying interaction mediated by digitality (all interaction is, by the way) as less human, less true and less worthy, obscuring the path forward for the vast majority of future students.
